The Naked and Famous//May 27
The Naked and Famous with White Sea and Strange Babes presented by 93.3 and Westword stopped by the Boulder Theatre as one of their U.S tour dates.
Strange Babes, a 5-member band, coming from Los Angeles and Auckland, New Zealand kicked off the night. With a psychadelic-pop feel, that could be compared to the British band Temples, Strange Babes had the audience moving by the first chorus of their first song. As their set progressed, the band seemingly became a fan favorite and the audience was completely immersed in the music.
Next came White Sea, headlined by LA native Morgan Kibby. White Sea is Kibby’s current solo project, previously fronting the LA indie band The Romanovs, and touring with French indie-electronic group M83. The set started out slow, but the distracted audience quickly snapped back into the alternative mix when the tune “Future Husbands Past Lives” started playing and Kibby’s incredible vocal range came in full force, hitting notes that could break glass in a heartbeat. White Sea just released their album In Cold Blood on May 20th, combining heavy synthesizer and fragile ballads for the full experience of an well-rounded album.
And the moment everyone had been waiting for, the headliner, The Naked and Famous, arrived. Their performance reeled the audience in from start to finish, combining indie and melodic pop as well as a dash of punk. The band, founded in New Zealand by Alisa Xayalith and Thom Powers has numerous credits including being featured on movie soundtracks such as Dallas Buyers Club, and has won awards including Top Digital, Canadian, and Rock Albums. The set up of the stage was very simple, keeping the main focus on Thom and Alisa at the frontline, but the intense light show went along with the driving electronic force behind their music. Ending the set with one of their most well known songs, “Young Blood”, had the crowd in a frenzy.
The Naked and Famous will continue their tour in the U.S until June 13th, and then they head to Germany, Italy, Poland, Hungary, Austria, Switzerland, Holland, England, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Canada and then back to the United States hitting top festivals such as Bonnaroo in Tennessee.
